Joseph Walker, a 19-year-old from Fleetwood, will make his professional boxing debut in the super welterweight division at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool on September 19, 2026. The former Fleetwood High student enters the paid ranks after a successful amateur career in which he won the majority of his 40-plus bouts.
Amateur Success and Fast-Track to Professional Ranks
Walker's amateur career included reaching the semi-final stage of the Manchester Box Cup last year, which he described as the highlight of his time in the unpaid ranks. “Just getting there fulfilled an ambition,” he said.
His trainer, Josh O’Gara of JFT Boxing, said the decision to turn professional came early because of Walker's dominance as an amateur. “I’ve trained Joseph for several years and given how he’s dominated in the amateurs, we’ve fast-tracked him into the professionals,” O’Gara explained.
Training and Motivation
Walker balances his boxing career with a job in a dental laboratory, training twice daily, five days a week. “My training is intense at present with twice daily sessions five days a week,” he said.
He first took up boxing after watching a local show, having previously played football. “In team sports you can hide behind the other players, but not in boxing. If you’re unprepared or slack off it shows,” Walker added.
Manager and Trainer Back the Prospect
Manager Glenn Banks expressed confidence in Walker's potential. “He’s a good prospect assuming he remains disciplined,” Banks said. “I’ve a good relationship with O’Gara and I’m sure that Joseph has the talent to lead a future stable of professionals coming out of JFT.”
Ticket Sales and Local Support
Walker's debut will take place on a 'small hall' show, where home boxers are responsible for selling tickets. “The onus is on the home boxers to sell tickets. The ability to generate support through ticket sales is essential for a novice professional to establish himself,” he said.
He is building a fanbase through social media and is calling on local support. “I’m trusting Fleetwood people will get behind me,” Walker added.
