Alejandro Garnacho has a lot to prove to Unai Emery at Aston Villa, according to former Chelsea player Pat Nevin. The Argentina international joined Villa on a season-long loan from Chelsea, with a conditional obligation to buy for around £43m if he plays a certain number of matches. Nevin believes Garnacho must demonstrate he is a team player, a non-negotiable under Emery.
Pat Nevin’s Verdict on Garnacho
Speaking to Betano Online Casino, Nevin said: “Alejandro Garnacho has to prove himself. There is skill there, but many fans in England haven't taken to him. He's one of those players who gets booed by every set of fans. He and Marc Cucurella both got that at Chelsea.” Nevin added: “He's got to show he's a team player and adapt the predictable parts of his game. If he can do that, he can be a player for Aston Villa.”
Nevin also emphasised the financial aspect: “He has to show the manager that his impact and attitude are better than they have been for the money spent.” Garnacho, 22, joined Chelsea from Manchester United for £40m last summer but struggled, scoring just once in the Premier League.
The Loan Deal and Future Obligation
Villa confirmed Garnacho’s arrival last week. The deal includes a conditional obligation to buy for £43m, triggered by a set number of appearances this season. This represents a significant investment for Villa, who are building for the future under Emery.
Manager Unai Emery expressed delight: “We are delighted with Alejandro. He is so talented, young and he showed us his wish to help our project. We are really happy.” Emery’s project includes Champions League football this season after Villa’s strong finish last term.
Emery and Garnacho’s Hopes
Garnacho himself is optimistic about the move. “I’m really happy to be here. I can’t wait to start on the pitch. It’s an important club that is growing really quickly, so I can’t wait to get started,” he said. “I was looking for a club to get confidence at and to try to be the player I was in my first years at Manchester United.”
The winger also revealed talks with Emery were key: “I spoke with the manager and I think he will give me the confidence to be here and to help the team. I spoke with Unai before I came here and he gave me confidence. That’s why I’m here.” Garnacho is also excited about European football: “It’s important to play in European competitions. The Champions League is the best one, so we’re going to play in that this season. I’m really happy about that and hopefully we can do something important.”
With Emery’s demanding style and Garnacho’s point to prove, the coming season will be crucial for the Argentine’s career at Villa Park.
