Gary Neville has warned that Aston Villa’s biggest challenge this season is keeping hold of manager Unai Emery, after the club’s alarming 4-0 defeat at Brighton on the opening weekend of the Premier League campaign. Speaking on the Gary Neville Podcast, the former Manchester United defender said Villa’s squad has been weakened by summer departures and that the club must act quickly to bring in new players.
Villa’s squad stripped of key players
Villa travelled to the Amex without Ollie Watkins and Emiliano Martínez, both of whom have been linked with moves away in the closing days of the transfer window. With Watkins absent and Tammy Abraham and Brian Madjo injured, Emery had no recognised striker available. The result was a blunt attacking display: Villa failed to register a single shot on target and managed just four touches inside the Brighton penalty box across the full 90 minutes.
Brighton raced into a 4-0 lead inside 31 minutes, capitalising on defensive errors from Villa. The visitors steadied themselves after half-time but could not produce a comeback. Neville described the goals Villa conceded as “horrific” and said the team selection exposed the scale of the squad’s losses.
Neville: ‘They’ve had the heart ripped out of it’
“You looked at the Villa team as it was announced, and you looked at the Villa bench, and you were like, they've had the heart ripped out of it,” Neville said. He pointed to the departures of key figures, saying: “You talk about who's left: Tielemans, Rogers, Konsa. Talk about the heart being ripped out of Newcastle's midfield. I mean, the experience that they've lost there.”
Neville also referenced the uncertainty surrounding Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), which he said has left clubs unsure of their financial position. “There's this peculiar thing going on at the moment with PSR, and sort of no one knows where the money is. It's all over the shop, isn't it?” he added.
Emery’s future the key concern
During the match, Neville said his immediate thought was whether Emery would want to stay. “The big thing that I was thinking during that match at 4-0 was, they've got to keep Unai Emery. Is Unai Emery going to think, ‘Hang on a minute, I can't be associated with this’?” he said.
Neville praised Emery as “the best manager in the league from a point of view of overall record and his experience” and said he hopes the Spaniard remains at Villa Park. “I really want Villa to do well, and I want Unai Emery to stay there because I think I love the idea of different teams breaking into the Champions League places,” he said.
Need for new signings this week
Neville stressed that Villa must bring in reinforcements before the transfer window closes. He mentioned reported interest in Germany midfielder Leon Goretzka and said Emery has a track record of improving squads. “If they can get three or four in this week, he does have a habit, Unai, of being able to get players in,” Neville said.
He acknowledged Villa’s recent progress, noting the club’s rise from the Championship a decade ago to competing for European places. “It's a brilliant journey that they've been on, and sort of getting into this position. But this could go like that quite quickly. So they've got to hold on to the manager. They've somehow got to get some players in this week,” he added.
