Aston Villa's hopes of signing Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones for £35 million have been thrown into doubt, with Inter Milan emerging as a serious rival for his signature.
Transfer Uncertainty
According to reports from Gazetta Dello Sport, Jones is high on Inter's transfer wishlist and is expected to leave Anfield this summer. The 25-year-old has only one year remaining on his Liverpool contract, and rumors of a strained relationship with manager Arne Slot persist.
Inter's Interest
Inter had previously attempted to sign Jones in January but withdrew after Liverpool requested Denzel Dumfries in exchange. Now, the Italian club is ready to renew their pursuit, with Jones reportedly prioritizing a move to the San Siro over Aston Villa or Newcastle United.
Jones' contract situation makes him an attractive prospect in the transfer market, as he could be available for a reduced fee. Liverpool value the academy graduate at around £35 million, but with time running out, they may be forced to accept less.
Liverpool's Dilemma
The Liverpool Echo noted: "Given Jones is approaching the final 12 months of his contract with no sign yet of a fresh agreement being reached, Liverpool may now have to alter that stance. They value the 25-year-old midfielder at around £35 million, with the summer likely the last chance they will at present have of gaining significant income from his sale."
After last summer's squad overhaul, Liverpool can ill afford another exodus of senior players. However, their hands may be tied, especially with Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson already confirmed to leave on free transfers after the final game of the season. Additionally, Ibrahima Konate is poised to follow them out the door next month unless a new contract is agreed.
Aston Villa's Position
Aston Villa had been monitoring Jones closely, but Inter's interest has complicated their plans. The Midlands club are expected to bolster their squad significantly over the summer, but they may now need to look elsewhere for midfield reinforcements.
