Ally McCoist believes Aston Villa supporters have every reason to worry about Unai Emery's future at the club, describing the summer exodus as a “decimation” of the squad. Speaking on talkSPORT Breakfast, the pundit pointed to the departures of Ezri Konsa, Youri Tielemans, Lucas Digne and Morgan Rogers, with Ollie Watkins and Emi Martínez also tipped to leave before the transfer window shuts.
Heavy defeats and key exits
Villa began their Premier League campaign with a 4-0 defeat at Brighton on Sunday, conceding all four goals inside the first 31 minutes. The match also saw João Gomes sent off for kicking out at Georginio Rutter, adding to a miserable afternoon for the visitors.
With just over a week left in the transfer window, Villa face the prospect of further departures. McCoist suggested Watkins appears determined to leave, with a move to Saudi Arabia reportedly in the pipeline. “You feel for them, it's an absolute shambles,” he said. “You think about the players they have lost: Tielemans, Digne, Rogers, and Konsa. It certainly looks as if Ollie Watkins has made his mind up. It looks as though he's going to take the buck and head over to Saudi Arabia.”
Emery's patience under strain
Despite the turmoil, McCoist acknowledged some positives from Villa's recent Super Cup final against PSG, where Hemmings and Madjo impressed. “I actually thought they did really well in the Super Cup final against PSG. Hemmings and Madjo did well, and I thought there was optimistic signs for them,” he said.
However, the Brighton result has shifted the mood. McCoist warned that Villa fans should be “really concerned” about what is happening on and off the pitch. “But, having watched what unfolded at the weekend, I think the Villa fans have got to be really concerned about what's happening in front of them,” he added.
What's next for Villa?
The pundit also raised doubts over Emery's long-term commitment, suggesting the manager could eventually question his position. “I'd be really concerned with what's happening, potentially, with the manager because, surely at some point Unai Emery is going to say, what's the point?” McCoist said.
With the transfer window closing soon, Villa will need to bring in several new signings if more players are allowed to leave. The club's response to this crisis will determine whether Emery stays or looks for an exit.
