John McGinn Calls for Villa Park Atmosphere Boost Through Performance
Aston Villa captain John McGinn has emphatically stated that it is the responsibility of the players to generate a vibrant atmosphere at Villa Park, rather than depending on external elements like fireworks displays. The Scottish midfielder highlighted this as the club prepares for back-to-back home fixtures this week, aiming to secure consecutive victories in Birmingham.
Return from Injury and Current League Position
McGinn, who could make his first start at Villa Park since January following a knee injury sustained in the 1-0 defeat against Everton, returned to the squad for the European trip to Lille last week. He then started in the recent defeat at Old Trafford against Manchester United, although he was substituted after playing only sixty minutes.
The loss to Manchester United has allowed the Red Devils to open up a three-point gap over Unai Emery's Aston Villa side in the Premier League table. However, inconsistent performances from Chelsea and Liverpool have fortunately kept Villa within the coveted top four positions ahead of the upcoming weekend clash against West Ham United.
McGinn's Candid Assessment of Home Form
In a frank admission, McGinn acknowledged the shifting dynamics: "We had a much larger gap to the teams beneath us. Man United have picked up, and Chelsea and Liverpool are indifferent, like ourselves." He continued, "There are teams in better form, but what we have shown over the years is that we can put momentum together and runs together."
The captain pinpointed a critical area for immediate improvement: home form. He reflected, "One thing which needs to improve is our home form. Over the years, when we have managed to finish in positions in the league which are probably higher than expected at the time, it is due to the fact that we made Villa Park a hard place to come."

McGinn elaborated on how to reclaim that formidable home advantage, dismissing reliance on superficial stimulants. "We need to get back to teams coming to Villa Park and realizing they've been in a game. We are at home on Thursday and Sunday, and we want to get the place rocking - but not by just singing before the game, or fireworks, or anything like that," he stated.
Instead, the midfielder emphasized a performance-driven approach: "It’s about putting your foot through the ball, getting stuck in, getting the crowd going by personality, ability, and character. This is the time to show character." He concluded with a challenge to his teammates, "It’s very easy to show that when the team is playing well and you’re at your best. This is the time that real players come out and get the place going."
