John McGinn Explains Bench Laughter During Aston Villa's Dominant Victory
Aston Villa captain John McGinn has shed light on the laughter seen from the bench during the team's emphatic 4-0 win over Bologna in the Europa League quarter-finals. The victory secured a 7–1 aggregate triumph and a place in the semi-finals against Nottingham Forest.
Villa's Commanding Performance at Villa Park
Following a 3–1 away win in Italy the previous week, Villa delivered a stunning performance at Villa Park on Thursday night. Ollie Watkins opened the scoring with his 100th goal for the club, setting the tone for a ninth consecutive Europa League victory. Emi Buendia quickly doubled the lead, and despite Morgan Rogers having a penalty saved, he managed to score before half-time.
Ezri Konsa sealed the win with a late goal, showcasing a fine finish by swivelling in the box and volleying past Bologna goalkeeper Federico Ravaglia in front of the Holte End. This marked Konsa's second goal in as many games from a corner.
McGinn's Reaction to Konsa's Goal
Speaking to TNT Sports after the match, McGinn explained the laughter from the dugout. "It was a great finish! We were laughing in the dugout," he said. "He should probably score more goals from set-pieces, so he will be chuffed with that. We are delighted to be in the semis."
McGinn praised the team's overall performance, emphasizing the importance of scoring first against a dangerous Bologna side known for their aggressive pressing. "It was a brilliant performance, we needed to get the first goal. It was very important because they’re a dangerous team away from home – they’ve shown that over the years," he added.
Key Moments and Team Objectives
McGinn highlighted the significance of early forward passing, which contrasted with the previous week's approach and led to Watkins' milestone goal. "I’m delighted for Ollie, it’s a great achievement at a massive club. You could see at the end that he’s delighted," McGinn stated.
He also noted the team's focus on respecting Bologna while maintaining their lead, with an eye on upcoming league commitments. "The manager touched upon that we had to respect Bologna and treat the game as if it was 0-0, but once you get ahead it was about trying to look after ourselves," McGinn explained. "We’ve got a big game on Sunday and we have an objective in the league to try and make the top five. We need to recover now for Sunday."
The victory not only advances Villa in European competition but also boosts morale as they aim for a strong finish in the domestic league.
