James Morrison has challenged West Bromwich Albion midfielder Isaac Price to build on his impressive pre-season form and establish himself as a key player for the Baggies this season. The former Scotland international, who now works as a coach at the Hawthorns, believes the 21-year-old has the potential to make a significant impact in the Championship campaign.
Pre-Season Promise
Price has been one of the standout performers during Albion's pre-season preparations, scoring in the friendly against Bolton Wanderers and impressing with his energy and composure in midfield. Morrison, who made over 300 appearances for the club, has been encouraged by what he has seen from the young midfielder in training and in match situations.
“Isaac has been excellent in pre-season,” Morrison told the club's official website. “He's shown great energy, he's got on the ball, and he's looked really sharp. The challenge for him now is to take that into the season and show everyone what he can do on a consistent basis.”
Competition for Places
Morrison acknowledged that Price faces stiff competition for a starting spot in Carlos Corberán's midfield, with the likes of Alex Mowatt, Jayson Molumby, and John Swift all vying for places. However, he insisted that the former Everton academy product has the attributes to force his way into the manager's plans.
“There's a lot of quality in that midfield, but Isaac has shown he can compete with them,” Morrison added. “He's athletic, he's technical, and he's got a good attitude. If he keeps working hard and listening to the coaches, he'll get his opportunities.”
Impact on the Squad
Price joined West Brom from Standard Liège in January 2024 and made 12 appearances in the second half of last season. His pre-season displays have suggested he is ready to take on a more prominent role, and Morrison believes the youngster can be a valuable asset over the course of a long campaign.
“The Championship is a demanding league, and you need a squad with depth,” Morrison said. “Isaac is someone who can come in and make a difference, whether that's starting games or coming off the bench. He's got a bright future ahead of him.”
West Brom kick off their new Championship season at home to Leeds United on Saturday, and Price will be hoping to be involved in the matchday squad as the Baggies look to improve on last season's fifth-place finish.
