Nathan Redmond Aims to Change Opinions on Birmingham City Return

Former Birmingham City player Nathan Redmond has declared his upcoming match against his former club feels 'written in the stars' as he prepares to make his debut for new Championship side Blackburn Rovers. The 32-year-old winger, who recently signed a short-term deal with Rovers until the season's end, could feature against Birmingham City on Good Friday at St Andrew's @ Knighthead Park.

Emotional Return to St Andrew's

Redmond, a product of Birmingham City's Wast Hills academy, describes the potential return as particularly meaningful. The stadium holds special memories for the player, having witnessed both his professional debut and his first senior goal during a Europa League victory over Nacional in 2011. Despite his emotional connection to the club, Redmond remains focused on securing victory for his current team.

'It's written in the stars,' Redmond stated. 'They're under a different sort of pressure. I'm still a Birmingham fan at heart and always will be, and I've still got family that go to the games - every home game, religiously - so all loyalties aside, we want to win the game. Every game is important to us, and I'll be looking to win the game.'

Proving Fitness After Injury Struggles

The experienced forward has faced significant injury challenges in recent years, with his last league start occurring before his return to England from Turkish club Besiktas in 2023. Subsequent spells at Burnley and Sheffield Wednesday yielded limited opportunities, with Redmond making just two starts in the League Cup for Burnley and seven substitute appearances for Sheffield Wednesday.

Redmond has been training consistently since January 2025 and is determined to demonstrate his physical readiness during the season's final weeks. 'There's been questions about if I'm fit, or not fit, and that was always the struggle in the summer,' he explained. 'From when I was back fit in January 2025, I've been training consistently, in squads, it's proven, I just wasn't really getting the opportunity.'

Data-Driven Football Challenges

The player acknowledged the modern game's increasing reliance on statistical analysis, which has sometimes hindered his opportunities. 'The game, with how it's going, it's really data-based, so the struggle was getting into clubs and letting people use their eyes to give me a chance,' Redmond noted. 'That's why I'm thankful to this club and the people that are in it.'

Blackburn Rovers currently sit 19th in the Championship table, just four points above the relegation zone with seven matches remaining. Redmond's arrival provides additional attacking options as the team battles to maintain their second-tier status. His potential debut against Birmingham City represents both a personal milestone and a crucial fixture in Blackburn's survival campaign.
