Prince William has disclosed which football team his daughter Princess Charlotte supports, and it is not Aston Villa. The Prince of Wales is a devoted Aston Villa fan and recently watched the team secure the Europa League trophy for the first time in over 40 years with a 3-0 victory against Freiburg in Istanbul.
William has consistently stated that he will not pressure his children—Prince George, Princess Charlotte, or Prince Louis—into supporting Villa. While visiting Nansledan in Cornwall to inspect a housing project supported by his Duchy of Cornwall estate, he spoke with children from Nansledan Primary School. When told that one pupil was a Chelsea supporter, William replied, “My daughter loves Chelsea.”
It is believed that Prince George, 11, is an Aston Villa fan like his father, having attended several matches, including last season’s Champions League quarter-final where Villa lost to Paris St Germain. William previously joked that Prince Louis, eight, supports “about five different” teams. He said, “I’m kind of hoping they’ll all find their own teams in time. They don’t all have to be Villa fans. I’m trying not to be biased but obviously they see how passionate I am about it and they watch the matches with me.”
William first started supporting Villa at age 11, explaining on the “That Peter Crouch Podcast” that he wanted to avoid following classmates who rooted for Manchester United or Arsenal. He decided after watching Villa play Bolton in the FA Cup, saying, “I felt a real connection with the club. Villa was a very proud Midlands club and it felt very special.”
Catherine, Princess of Wales, is also believed to support Chelsea, as revealed in 2015 during a Christmas party at the Anna Freud Centre. One child she met said, “We high-fived because she supports Chelsea and I support Chelsea.”
Prince Harry is reportedly less football-mad than his brother but is said to support Arsenal. During charity work in New Zealand, he mentioned that “most of the Royal Family are Arsenal fans.” In 2012, King Charles revealed he is a Burnley supporter, prompting the club to send him a VIP season ticket. The Duchess of Edinburgh is a fan of Sunderland, as she is patron of the club’s charitable arm, the Foundation of Light.
