Aston Villa have agreed a deal to sign Leon Goretzka on a free transfer. The former Bayern Munich midfielder is now expected to undergo a medical ahead of signing his contract next week.
Emery's midfield search after Onana injury
Unai Emery has been searching for a new midfielder after Amadou Onana suffered an ACL injury during the World Cup earlier this summer. Bayern Munich midfielder João Palhinha was targeted on loan, but the Portuguese is instead joining Benfica on a permanent deal.
After previously signalling their interest in Goretzka, Villa have now worked to finalise an agreement, with the Germany international set to join next week.
Goretzka's Bayern Munich career
Goretzka made 48 appearances for Bayern last season and, at the age of 31, started 25 Bundesliga matches under Vincent Kompany. After joining Bayern in 2018 on a free transfer from Schalke, Goretzka won seven Bundesliga titles, three German Cups and the Champions League in 2020.
Villa also target Southampton defender
Villa are also pushing to sign Taylor Harwood-Bellis from Southampton to replace Ezri Konsa, who has joined Arsenal. Southampton have rejected an initial bid for the England international.
