Aston Villa have set their sights on a surprise January move for England midfielder Conor Gallagher, who currently plays for Spanish giants Atletico Madrid.
Emery's Long-Standing Admiration
Villa manager Unai Emery has been a keen admirer of the 25-year-old midfielder for some time. The Spanish boss was actively interested in bringing Gallagher to Villa Park back in the summer of 2024. However, the player opted for a move abroad, joining Atletico Madrid from Chelsea in a transfer worth £38 million.
Since that move, Gallagher has made 77 appearances for Diego Simeone's side over the past two-and-a-half seasons. Despite this, his opportunities have been limited in the current campaign, with just four starts in La Liga. He has still managed to contribute, scoring twice in the league and once in the Champions League.
The Structure of a Potential Deal
According to reports from Sky Sports, Aston Villa's preferred strategy is to secure Gallagher on an initial loan deal, with an obligation to make the transfer permanent in the summer. This mirrors the structure the Midlands club used to sign Harvey Elliott from Liverpool on deadline day in September.
The situation surrounding Elliott's loan is reportedly significant. Talks with Liverpool over potentially terminating that agreement early are said to be ongoing, and their outcome could be pivotal in freeing up the resources and squad space needed to pursue Gallagher.
Although Gallagher is under contract at the Wanda Metropolitano until 2029 and is considered surplus to requirements, Atletico Madrid would ideally prefer a straight permanent sale this winter. However, they may be open to a loan with a compulsory purchase clause if the financial terms are satisfactory.
Villa's Winter Window Activity
Aston Villa have been relatively quiet so far in the January transfer window. Their only confirmed signing is Brazilian player Alysson from Gremio, in a deal valued at approximately £10 million.
The club is also expected to complete the signing of 16-year-old striker Brian Madjo from FC Metz for a similar fee, focusing on youth for the future. A move for an established Premier League-proven performer like Gallagher would represent a significant shift in strategy, addressing immediate first-team needs.
If successful, securing Conor Gallagher would be a major coup for Unai Emery, adding energy, goal threat, and Premier League experience to Villa's midfield as they continue to compete on multiple fronts this season.
