Aston Villa are preparing to part ways with goalkeeper Emi Martinez in the final two weeks of the summer transfer window, as they finalise the signing of Zion Suzuki from Parma. The deal for Suzuki is worth up to £30 million, and he is expected to become Villa's new number one.
This comes after Martinez's proposed move to Juventus fell through on Sunday. The Argentina international had been hoping to join Manchester United last summer, but instead focused on cementing his legacy at Villa, playing a key role in the club's Europa League triumph and helping the side finish fourth in the Premier League.
Martinez's Options Narrow
With time running out in the window, Martinez's options appear limited. His preference is thought to be a move abroad, especially with Premier League opportunities scarce. According to The Standard, Chelsea are not interested in signing him. Tottenham Hotspur could be the only other viable English option, but they have already secured Guglielmo Vicario, who joined Juventus instead of Martinez.
In Spain, Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Atletico Madrid all have strong goalkeeping departments. Diego Simeone might consider moving on from Jan Oblak, but he is the same age as Martinez, making a switch less likely.
Potential Destinations Abroad
A move to Ligue 1 seems off the cards, despite Paris Saint-Germain looking for a new goalkeeper. Suzuki was previously a prime target for PSG, but Martinez is unpopular in France due to his antics at the 2022 World Cup. Bundesliga clubs are unlikely to meet his wage demands, aside from Bayern Munich, but Manuel Neuer continues to perform at 40 years old.
Italy could be a viable destination, even after the Juventus move collapsed. Inter Milan let Yann Sommer leave for Club Brugge and signed Ivan Provedel from Lazio for €3 million, but Martinez's availability might alter their plans. Cesc Fabregas's Como have been ambitious in the transfer market and, with Champions League football, could offer an exciting opportunity.
Further Afield
Turkish giants Galatasaray could renew their interest, having made a late move for Martinez last summer. He was reluctant to join 12 months ago, but with limited options, a move with a huge wage might appeal. It remains unclear whether Martinez would consider a move to Saudi Arabia or MLS side Inter Miami, where he would link up with Lionel Messi.
