West Brom fans have overwhelmingly backed James Morrison to be handed the permanent managerial role, according to a recent poll. The interim boss and Albion legend has steered the side to safety thanks to a remarkable unbeaten run.
Morrison the toast of The Hawthorns
James Morrison was the toast of The Hawthorns on Saturday, having steered Albion to safety for a second time in a week. After survival was secured on Tuesday against Watford, Albion suffered a big setback when the EFL imposed a two-point sanction on them for PSR breaches. In a statement, Albion insisted they would ‘settle it on the pitch’, and they did just that. A point against Ipswich ensured the points deduction was irrelevant heading onto the final game of the season.
Turning a corner under Morrison
It was a superb end to what has been a dismal campaign for the faltering Baggies, but under Morrison they have turned a corner. As the weeks have passed, the calls for the former midfielder to be handed the job on a permanent basis have been growing. Morrison himself has been reserved on his future at the club, insisting talk around it can wait until the end of the season. But an Express & Star poll has revealed that the Baggies fans have a strong opinion on what they want to happen.
Poll results
After the failed appointments of Tony Mowbray, Ryan Mason and latterly Eric Ramsay, the fans believe that Morrison is now the man to steer them forward. From a poll of 235 Baggies fans, a total of 94 per cent have backed Morrison to be handed the job on a full-time basis. Six per cent believe Albion should be looking elsewhere, but it is the majority who want to see Morrison in permanent charge.
Fan reactions
Many Baggies fans believe there is no reason not to hand him the job. One posted on X: “After the job he has done and the reaction the players have had since he took over, they can’t not give him an opportunity next season. He’s earned it.” Another said: “Why wouldn’t you offer it to him? He’s taken a ragbag of a group and turned them into a team and fighting machine - this cannot and should not be underestimated.” While another added: “For me he has got the club back, the fans are totally on his side and if he is given the job I have no doubt we will finish a lot higher up the table. No better place with the Hawthorns rocking. Have a good summer.”
