Backroom Clearout and Caretaker Appointment
The club's statement confirmed a broader clearout, with assistant coaches Nigel Gibbs and Sam Pooley also leaving The Hawthorns. To ensure continuity, former player James Morrison has been installed as caretaker manager while the club conducts its search for a permanent successor.
Mason's tenure, which began with promise last summer, has ended prematurely. He arrived from a coaching role at Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League, signing a three-year contract that was set to run until June 2028. This move to the Midlands represented his first managerial position in the Football League.
A Season of Struggle Leads to the Sack
Unfortunately for the 34-year-old, his inaugural season in charge failed to meet expectations. West Brom have been plagued by inconsistency throughout the current campaign, with a particularly poor record on their travels causing significant damage to their league position.
After 26 fixtures, the team finds itself languishing in 18th place in the Championship table. More alarmingly, they sit just seven points above the relegation zone, a margin that prompted the board to act in a bid to secure their second-tier status.
