Wolves Eye Rangers Captain James Tavernier for Summer Move
Wolves Consider James Tavernier Summer Transfer

Wolves are preparing for a busy summer transfer window and are considering a move for experienced defender James Tavernier, the Express & Star understands.

The 34-year-old right-back is out of contract at Rangers at the end of the season and has already announced he will depart the Scottish side after 11 years.

Potential Options

Reports have credited Spurs with an interest in the defender if they are relegated to the Championship, while it is understood Wolves are considering him as one of a number of options to bolster the squad for next season.

Rob Edwards has already committed to making a lot of changes to his squad in the summer, with relegation already confirmed, and Tavernier is a potential addition.

Tavernier's Career at Rangers

The Englishman has been a key player for Rangers since joining in 2015 and he has captained the club for the last eight years, winning the Scottish Premiership, Scottish Cup and League Cup and also captaining them to the 2022 Europa League final, which they lost on penalties to German side Eintracht Frankfurt.

Tavernier has been known as a goalscoring right-back, notching 144 goals in 563 appearances for the Glasgow club.

Tavernier's Statement

In a social media statement announcing his Rangers departure, Tavernier said: "This hasn't been an easy decision. This club has been a huge part of my life and my family's over the past 11 years. It's given me so much, both on and off the pitch and from the moment I arrived, I've always tried to give everything I had to represent it in the right way.

"To have had the honour of being made captain of this club since 2018 is something I will always be incredibly proud of. Leading this team out, wearing the armband and being trusted in that role has meant more to me than I can properly put into words.

"This isn't the end just yet. There is still a season to finish and we are fully focused on pushing for the league title. I will continue to give absolutely everything as I always have until the very last day.

"While I feel the time is right for a new challenge, my focus right now is on finishing this season the right way, together."

Wolves' Summer Plans

With his extensive experience and leadership skills, Wolves see him as a potentially strong option to improve their squad in a summer that will see plenty of incomings and outgoings.

Wolves are also keen on fellow free agent Dan Neil, who will leave Sunderland this summer once his deal expires, following a loan at Ipswich. The 24-year-old has experience captaining Sunderland to promotion from the Championship and would strengthen Wolves’ midfield options, with Andre and Joao Gomes likely to be sold.

Meanwhile, it is understood Wolves are also monitoring Torino winger Alieu Njie. The 20-year-old has one goal and one assist in 11 Serie A games this season but has only started once in the Italian top flight all campaign. Since making his Torino senior debut in 2024, he has made 31 appearances in all competitions, scoring twice and assisting once.
