Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Xavi Simons has been ruled out for the remainder of the season and this summer's World Cup after suffering a knee injury during the clash with Wolves. The incident was compounded by a heated exchange between the Netherlands international and home supporters at Molineux.
Simons went down following a collision with Wolves defender Hugo Bueno, sparking frustration inside the stadium. As a stretcher was brought on to take him off, jeers rang out from the crowd. The stretcher was carried behind the goal near the North Bank, where the midfielder appeared to exchange words with Wolves fans.
Videos circulating online show Simons angrily confronting the supporters, who responded in kind. The altercation added to the tension of an already fraught match.
It has now been confirmed that Simons has suffered a knee injury that will end his season prematurely and rule him out of the World Cup. After the news was confirmed, the midfielder posted on social media: "They say life can be cruel and today it feels that way. My season has come to an abrupt end and I'm just trying to process it. Honestly, I'm heartbroken. None of it makes sense.
"All I've wanted to do is fight for my team and now the ability to do that has been snatched away from me… along with the World Cup. Representing my country this summer…just gone. It'll take time to find peace with this, but I'll continue to be the best teammate I can be. I have no doubt that together we'll win this fight. I'll walk this path now, guided by faith, with strength, with resilience, with belief, as I count down the days to getting back out there. Be patient with me."
Simons now faces a long road to recovery, with Tottenham and Netherlands supporters alike wishing him well.
