Zion Suzuki completes £30m Aston Villa move

Aston Villa have completed the signing of Japan international goalkeeper Zion Suzuki from Serie A side Parma in a deal worth £30 million. The move ends a dramatic transfer saga that saw Suzuki turn down a switch to Paris Saint-Germain in favour of a move to Villa Park.

Villa beat PSG to Suzuki's signature

Villa made their approach for Suzuki last week after his proposed move to PSG collapsed. The European champions had a jet prepared to fly Suzuki to Paris for a medical, but Villa's offer proved more attractive, particularly given their plan to install him as their new number one goalkeeper.

The 22-year-old, who was born in Newark, New Jersey, to a Ghanaian father and a Japanese mother, grew up in Urawa, Japan. He came through the youth ranks at Urawa Red Diamonds and, at 16 years and five months old, signed his first professional contract, becoming one of the youngest players in the club's history to do so.

Emi Martinez's future in doubt

When Villa agreed a deal for Suzuki, it was expected that current first-choice goalkeeper Emi Martinez would join Juventus. However, that move quickly fell through on Sunday, leaving Villa to explore alternative solutions for the Argentine, who still has three years remaining on his contract but has been open to a new challenge.

Suzuki's career so far

Suzuki joins Villa after two years in Serie A with Parma, where he made 59 appearances and kept 13 clean sheets. Before that, he spent the 2023/24 season on loan at Belgian outfit St Truiden.

His arrival at Villa Park is expected to bolster the club's goalkeeping options, with the Japan international seen as a long-term investment. The deal also represents a significant outlay for Villa, who have moved quickly to secure one of the most sought-after young goalkeepers in Europe.
