Cancer Kickers Walking Football Sessions Score Early Success in Birmingham
Cancer Kickers Walking Football Early Success

Walking football sessions for cancer survivors and those undergoing treatment, known as Cancer Kickers, have scored early success in Birmingham, with 40 participants joining in the first month. The initiative, run by the Football and Community Development department at Birmingham City University in partnership with the City of Birmingham Rockets walking football club, aims to provide a safe and supportive environment for people affected by cancer to engage in physical activity.

Programme Details and Impact

The sessions take place every Tuesday from 11am to 12pm at the university's sports facilities. Participants have reported improvements in both physical fitness and mental wellbeing. According to Dr. Paul Kinnersley, a senior lecturer in sport and exercise science at Birmingham City University, the early success has been 'phenomenal.' He stated, 'We have seen a real mix of people coming along, from those who have just been diagnosed to those who are years into their recovery. The social aspect is just as important as the physical exercise.'

Community Response and Future Plans

The programme has received positive feedback from the local community, with many participants highlighting the sense of camaraderie and understanding among the group. Organisers plan to expand the sessions if demand continues to grow, with potential additional weekly slots. The initiative is part of a broader effort to promote inclusive sports opportunities in Birmingham.
