Organisers of the popular Hackney Moves festival have announced a significant expansion of their community-focused running initiative, the Hackney Academy. The programme, which successfully launched last year, is set to double its intake for the 2026 event.
From 30 to 50: Academy Doubles Its Reach
Following a debut that saw 30 local runners complete a 12-week training journey together, the Academy is now opening its doors to 50 participants for the upcoming Hackney Half Marathon. The free programme is designed to build confidence, foster friendships, and ensure runners are fully prepared for race day through weekly coached sessions.
What Participants Receive
Successful applicants will gain a coveted package of support, including expert coaching, running kit, and most notably, a free entry to the already sold-out 2026 Hackney Half Marathon on Sunday, May 17. The initiative, created by race organisers Motiv Sports, is a core part of their mission to boost local involvement in the major sporting event.
Eligibility and How to Apply
To qualify for a place, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Live in Hackney or a neighbouring borough.
- Be aged 18 or over.
- Be new to running or returning after a long break.
- Commit to attending at least 10 of the 12 weekly training sessions.
The application window is open until Wednesday, January 14. Those interested can find full details and submit their application via the official Hackney Academy website.
The Hackney Academy sits within the wider Hackney Moves festival, a weekend celebration of running, fitness, and the borough itself. Last year's event attracted over 25,000 runners and a total of 60,000 visitors to Hackney Marshes, underlining its status as a major highlight in London's sporting calendar.
