Agent Details Decision Behind Youri Tielemans' Belgium Call-Up After Aston Villa Injury Return

Youri Tielemans' unwavering commitment and exceptional leadership qualities have been highlighted as pivotal factors in his selection for the Belgium national team, according to his agent. This decision comes shortly after the Aston Villa midfielder made his comeback from a significant ankle injury lay-off.

Injury Comeback and International Duty

The 28-year-old midfielder recently returned to action, featuring as a substitute in Aston Villa's 2-0 Premier League victory over West Ham United before the international break. This marked his first appearance in two months following his ankle injury. Despite this recent return, Tielemans has joined the Belgium squad for their current round of international fixtures in the United States.

Belgium's national team management agreed to Aston Villa boss Unai Emery's request to carefully manage Tielemans' playing time during these matches. The player's representative, Bob Claes, has now provided detailed insight into why his client reported for international duty so soon after recovery.

Leadership Beyond the Armband

In an interview with Belgian publication Het Laatste Nieuws, Claes emphasized Tielemans' natural leadership qualities, noting that the midfielder serves as Belgium's captain. "There are people who don't need the captain's armband to be a leader, and there are others who have the armband but never will be one. Youri belongs to the first category," Claes stated.

The agent further explained: "Being allowed to wear that armband is a source of immense pride for Youri. He takes that role very seriously." Claes also pointed to Tielemans' popularity within the national squad, attributing it to the player's character and professional standards.

Professional Standards and Work Ethic

Claes elaborated on Tielemans' professional approach, saying: "Youri sets the bar high. In terms of standards and values. In terms of work ethic. And in terms of intelligence. A dream to work with. Youri constantly seeks improvements but is also open to dialogue."

This assessment aligns with comments from Aston Villa manager Unai Emery, who previously expressed confidence in Tielemans' intelligence and commitment. Before the West Ham match, Emery addressed concerns about the midfielder traveling to the United States so soon after injury recovery.

Managerial Support and Progressive Return

"The national team for them is very important. And he's very intelligent," Emery said of Tielemans. "His commitment with us is a huge commitment, and he's recovering just to play some minutes on Sunday with us and to go with his national team. And, of course, I accepted it and I want as well, to give him the opportunity to go now with his national team. For him, it's very important."

Emery referenced a similar situation from October or November when Tielemans previously returned from injury and joined the national team. The Villa manager explained that club and national medical teams collaborated to ensure a progressive reintroduction to play, which proved successful.

"We spoke between the club and the national medical teams responsible, to introduce him progressively. And he did fantastic. Youri Tielemans is intelligent and his commitment here with us is a massive commitment to do everything we want," Emery added.

International Fixtures and Future Involvement

Tielemans made his comeback appearance against West Ham, playing the final 23 minutes of the match. His involvement for Belgium in their upcoming friendlies against the USA and Mexico remains to be determined, with both games taking place in the United States.

The midfielder's agent and club manager have both emphasized the careful management of his return to full fitness, with coordinated efforts between Aston Villa and Belgium's medical staff to ensure his long-term wellbeing while honoring his international commitments.
