Gary Neville Issues Stark Warning to Ollie Watkins Over World Cup Hopes

Former Manchester United defender and Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville has delivered a brutal assessment of Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins' current form, warning that the forward's place in England's World Cup squad is in serious jeopardy.

'Desperate Form' Could Prove Costly

Speaking after Aston Villa's 3-1 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday, Neville described Watkins as being in "real desperate form" and suggested the striker could pay the ultimate price of missing out on international selection.

"It was a tough day out there for Ollie Watkins," Neville said on Sky Sports. "He won't go back to Birmingham tonight feeling his best. When the ball got played up to him he wasn't great, when he got one on ones in the boxes against Yoro and Maguire in the last part of the first half they took it off him."

Missed Opportunities at Old Trafford

Watkins drew another Premier League blank against Manchester United, failing to find the net despite several promising opportunities. The striker has now scored just eight times in the Premier League this season, with his last goal coming against Newcastle at the end of January.

Neville highlighted specific moments where Watkins failed to capitalize, stating: "If you said to Ollie Watkins, away at Old Trafford you're going to get two one on ones, driving against Leny Yoro and Maguire in the corners of the boxes and you're inside the box and they can't really tackle you with any sort of level of certainty because you're in penalty territory, and they're going to take it off you, you'd be like 'I can't believe that's going to happen'. But that's what happened to him today."

England Place in Serious Doubt

The Sky Sports pundit went further in his analysis, directly linking Watkins' club form to his international prospects. "I have to say I think he looks well off it and his England place for the summer is really in doubt because of the current level of confidence he's at and the current position he's in," Neville declared.

Watkins' performance against Manchester United came just days after he had fired Unai Emery's side to victory against Lille in the Europa League, highlighting the inconsistency that has plagued his season.

Substitution Adds to Concerns

The striker was substituted during the match, adding to concerns about his current effectiveness. Neville contrasted Watkins' performance with what might have been, saying: "A real on-fire Ollie Watkins could have caused problems here today, but that wasn't the case. A real difficult day for him."

The warning comes at a crucial time for Watkins, who will need to rediscover his scoring touch quickly if he hopes to secure a place in England's World Cup squad this summer.
