In an exclusive interview, Birmingham City's South Korean midfielder Paik Seung-ho has disclosed his deliberate choice to postpone critical shoulder surgery, prioritizing his commitment to the club and his aspirations for the upcoming World Cup. This courageous move comes despite explicit medical advice warning of heightened injury risks.
Ignoring Medical Guidance for Team and Personal Goals
Paik sustained his second shoulder dislocation of the season during a recent draw against West Bromwich Albion, following an earlier incident at Middlesbrough in November. Specialists informed him that the injury had worsened, with additional damage around the shoulder, and recommended immediate surgery, which would sideline him for two to three months. However, Paik had already resolved to reject this advice before even consulting the specialist.
"They told me the best option is surgery because once the shoulder dislocates, it becomes more prone to recurring incidents," Paik explained. "But in my head, I had already decided not to proceed because undergoing surgery would mean losing the entire season."
Motivations Behind the Risky Choice
Paik's decision is driven by dual objectives: repaying the trust of Birmingham City manager Chris Davies and securing his spot in South Korea's World Cup squad. He emphasized that his primary focus is on performing well for the team, with World Cup considerations secondary but significant.
"The first thing for me was to excel this season, demonstrate my capabilities, and support the team," Paik stated. "Only after that do I think about the World Cup. You need a strong season to earn a place in the squad, and I'm not guaranteed a spot, so I must consistently showcase my performances."
Gratitude Towards Manager Chris Davies
Paik expressed deep appreciation for Davies, who has consistently provided opportunities and defended him against criticism earlier in the season. This support has fueled Paik's determination to contribute on the field, despite the physical risks.
"I can feel that he's given me numerous chances and trust," Paik said of Davies. "I always strive to give my all in every game and training session. My position isn't guaranteed, so I need to prove myself constantly, as you can lose your place in an instant."

Despite the injury, Paik has returned to Birmingham City's starting lineup, featuring in matches against Charlton Athletic and Queens Park Rangers without further incidents. "I feel confident in the shoulder now, but it's somewhat about luck," Paik noted. "When I pull or need to protect myself, I feel fine; the issue arises if I fall awkwardly. I'm working on various drills to fortify the shoulder."

Paik has notably enhanced his goal-scoring record this season, netting four Championship goals so far, a significant improvement from just one goal in the previous League One title-winning campaign. This output surpasses that of midfield colleagues like Jhon Solis, Tommy Doyle, and the departed Marc Leonard, none of whom have scored this season.
"Scoring more goals and assists was a major target for this year," Paik admitted. "While playing well is crucial, contributing with goals or assists visibly helps the team and demonstrates your impact."

With Birmingham City facing an uphill battle to reach the play-offs, Paik remains motivated by the prospect of participating in his second World Cup, having previously experienced the tournament in Qatar. He described it as a dream come true and is determined to add to his 23 international caps.
"Being at the World Cup is the ultimate feeling for any footballer," Paik reflected. "It was like living a dream every day in Qatar, and I truly want to be there again."
