Love Island's Wes Nelson faces New Year's Eve surgery after Achilles injury
Wes Nelson to have surgery after football injury

Former Love Island contestant Wes Nelson is facing a surgical procedure on New Year's Eve after suffering a severe injury while playing football.

A Painful Setback for the Reality Star

The 27-year-old television personality and musician revealed he had ruptured his Achilles tendon during a festive period game, an incident he initially shared on social media. Posting a photo of his bandaged foot, Nelson quipped about his misfortune, writing: "Decided to play football for the first time in years... Snapped my Achilles." He humorously added that he was retiring from the sport in favour of golf.

However, the situation has proven more serious than first thought. Nelson provided fans with a sobering update on Wednesday via Instagram Stories, sharing an image of himself on a hospital trolley. The photo showed his leg in a full plaster cast, extending from his ankle to just below his knee.

New Year's Eve Operation Confirmed

In a caption accompanying the hospital image, Nelson confirmed the need for an operation. "Update. Looks like I'm getting an operation on New Year's Eve to reattach my Achilles," he wrote, emphasising the message with praying hands and a red heart emoji.

In a lighter moment, he shared another picture of his elevated, cast-covered leg, musing: "On another note, when I was younger, I wanted a cast so bad?! I can't be the only one."

A Challenging Year for the Star

This medical emergency caps off a difficult 12 months for Nelson, who rose to fame on the 2018 series of Love Island. The past year has seen him fall victim to theft on two separate occasions.

In October, he took to social media to vent his frustration after his full set of golf clubs and bag were stolen. "I actually hate what London has become. Twice in a year. Cheers," he posted at the time.

This incident followed a theft earlier in the year where a designer bag worth over £8,000 was stolen from a train while he travelled to Milton Keynes. Nelson recounted how a thief seated behind him slowly slid the bag from an overhead compartment before fleeing at a stop. He expressed relief that he had removed his MacBook, which contained his music, prior to the journey.

Despite these setbacks, Nelson has continued to build his music career post-Love Island. His track '11:11' gained significant online attention during the recent festive period, showcasing his transition from reality TV to recording artist.

Fans now wish the star a successful surgery and a speedy recovery as he heads into the new year facing an unexpected period of rehabilitation.
