Nikole Roberts, a 22-year-old former student from Coleg Menai in Bangor, has been selected to represent Team Wales in the women's 44kg weightlifting event at the upcoming Commonwealth Games. Her journey from local college to international stage highlights the strength of grassroots sports development in Wales.
A Rapid Rise in Weightlifting
Roberts, who completed a public services qualification at Coleg Menai, has quickly established herself among the country's top lifters. She currently holds the seventh position on the International Weightlifting Federation ranking list for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, a testament to her consistent performance and dedication.
“I’ve been looking forward to this day for so long,” Roberts said, expressing her excitement ahead of the competition. Her selection follows a series of strong performances on both national and international platforms.
Impressive Medal Haul
Roberts’ recent achievements include winning silver at the 2025 British Championships, along with two bronze medals from previous Commonwealth events. She also secured a silver medal at the European Senior Championships after competing at junior level the previous year. These results underscore her growing prowess in the sport.
Notably, Roberts is the only Welsh athlete selected for the elite British Weight Lifting World Class Programme, a prestigious scheme that supports the country's top weightlifters. Her inclusion highlights her exceptional talent and potential.
Records and Rankings
The athlete holds multiple national women's records, including a 72kg snatch, an 85kg clean and jerk, and a total lift of 157kg. These marks place her among the best in the UK and position her as a strong contender at the Commonwealth Games.
Her ranking of seventh on the IWF list for Glasgow indicates that she is within striking distance of the podium. With continued training and focus, Roberts could improve on that position and bring home a medal for Wales.
Grassroots to Glory
Roberts' progression from a college student in Bangor to an international competitor serves as an inspiration for young athletes in Wales. Her story underscores the importance of local sports programs and the opportunities they provide for talented individuals to pursue their dreams.
The Commonwealth Games represent the pinnacle of Roberts' career so far, and she enters the competition with confidence and determination. As she prepares to take the stage in Glasgow, the support from her hometown of Bangor and the wider Welsh community will be behind her.
With her combination of strength, technique, and mental fortitude, Nikole Roberts is poised to make her mark on the Commonwealth stage and continue to elevate Welsh weightlifting on the global scene.
