Ashleigh Nelson Champions Birmingham European Championships as Unparalleled for British Athletes
World and European medallist Ashleigh Nelson has hailed the upcoming European Athletics Championships in Birmingham as a "second to none" opportunity for British athletes, following her own historic Winter Olympics debut. Nelson made the Team GB squad to compete in the two-woman bobsleigh alongside pilot Adele Nicoll, becoming only the second British woman ever to compete in different sports across both the Summer and Winter Olympics.
A Lesson in Resilience from the Winter Games
Reflecting on her experience at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, Nelson described it as a profound lesson in resilience. This achievement came after she fought back from an Achilles injury that had dashed her hopes for the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics. "My first race, day one at the Winter Olympics was also my 35th birthday. You couldn’t see this because I had my blackout visor on, but my cheeks were right below my eyes because I was smiling so hard," Nelson shared.
She added, "I was just so happy to be there and race because I thought my career was done. To be standing on an Olympics start line two years later it really taught me how resilient I am. It taught me that we can all pivot when we want to or when we need to." Despite this being her fourth Olympic Games, having debuted at Beijing 2008, Nelson admitted to struggling with post-Olympic blues, noting the emotional letdown after years of focused preparation.
Excitement Builds for Birmingham 2026 European Championships
Turning her attention to athletics, Nelson expressed immense excitement for the European Championships, set to take place in Birmingham from August 10th to 16th, 2026. "It’s super exciting. I can’t believe we’ve never had a European Championships," she enthused. As a sprinter from Stoke-on-Trent who grew up competing at Alexander Stadium, Nelson sees this event as a pivotal moment for UK athletics.
"This is a real opportunity for the UK to get involved in athletics. I already know there's been a lot of interest in the home straight tickets. I would definitely encourage people to do that because you're going to be up close and personal with some of your favourite athletes," she advised. Nelson herself won bronze in the 100m at the Zurich 2014 European Championships, a victory she credits as a springboard to her subsequent World Championship and Olympic successes.
Memories of Home Success and Future Opportunities
While Nelson will not be competing in Birmingham this time, she fondly recalls her gold medal-winning performance at the 2022 Commonwealth Games held at Alexander Stadium. "I remember looking up into the stands and my mum was there with one of my friends that had come to watch me. She had managed to convince at least 20 people to shout Ashleigh. It was so special," she reminisced.
Emphasizing the unique atmosphere of home championships, Nelson stated, "A home championship for British athletes is second to none. The atmosphere is incredible and the crowd always support really hard." Fans eager to experience this can still secure tickets, with a new release of home straight seats going on sale from Tuesday, April 21st at 10 am.
This expanded coverage underscores Nelson's journey from injury setback to Olympic history, while championing the Birmingham event as a milestone for British sport, offering athletes and fans alike an unmatched platform for engagement and inspiration.
