The official countdown to one of the world's biggest sporting events has begun, with Birmingham taking centre stage for the launch of UEFA EURO 2028.
A City Illuminated for Football
The tournament's official launch was celebrated today in Birmingham, where the city’s unique host logo was unveiled to the public. To mark this significant occasion, the iconic Library of Birmingham was spectacularly lit up in the official colours of UEFA, signalling the start of a three-year journey to the championship.
Villa Park, the historic home of Aston Villa, is set to be a key venue, hosting four crucial matches during the tournament. The fixtures at the Birmingham ground are scheduled for 11, 15, 20, and 27 June 2028, promising a series of thrilling encounters for football fans.
A Record-Breaking Tournament for the UK and Ireland
UEFA EURO 2028 is poised to make history as the largest sporting event ever jointly staged across the UK and Ireland. In an unprecedented move, more than three million tickets will be made available, a figure that surpasses any previous European Championship and opens the event up to more supporters than ever before.
The football festival will kick off at the National Stadium of Wales in Cardiff on Friday, 9 June 2028. After a month of elite competition across nine world-class venues in eight host cities, the tournament will reach its dramatic conclusion with the Final at Wembley Stadium on Sunday, 9 July 2028.
Building a Lasting Legacy
Local leaders and club officials have expressed their pride and commitment to delivering an outstanding event. Cllr Sharon Thompson, Deputy Leader of Birmingham City Council, stated: “It’s wonderful to unveil Birmingham’s official host city logo for UEFA EURO 2028. We’re thrilled to welcome fans to Villa Park for this historic tournament.”
She emphasised that the launch is a key milestone in ongoing work with partners to ensure a safe, sustainable, and memorable event that will leave a positive social and economic impact on local residents and businesses for years to come.
