Cheltenham Racecourse Cancels Final Fixtures for Major Drainage Upgrade
Cheltenham Racecourse has made the dramatic decision to cancel the last three fixtures of its current season. This move is designed to facilitate a significant upgrade of the drainage system in the home straight, addressing issues that have plagued the track during a particularly wet winter.
Details of the Cancelled Events
The cancellation affects the two-day fixture scheduled for April 15 and 16, as well as the all-Hunter Chase card set for May 1. These events will no longer take place as originally planned, marking an early end to the season's racing calendar at the prestigious venue.
Statement from Clerk of the Course Jon Pullin
Jon Pullin, Clerk of the Course, emphasized that the primary goal is to ensure the highest quality racing surface for top-class jump racing. He explained, "Throughout the very wet winter, we have experienced a number of issues on the track. Working with drainage experts, we have identified an area that would benefit from being upgraded."
Pullin further noted that this upgrade will help address problems linked to a hole that appeared on Festival Trials Day, which subsequently created challenges in other sections of the track. To mitigate these issues temporarily, rail and hurdle positions were adjusted to provide the best possible surface on both the Old and New courses.
Timing and Rationale for the Project
While drainage improvements are typically carried out at the end of each season, the scale of this project and the last two unusually dry summers prompted officials to bring the work forward. Pullin stated, "This will mean that there is still sufficient moisture in the ground, allowing more time for the course to recover ahead of next season."
Comments from Chief Executive Guy Lavender
Chief executive Guy Lavender reinforced the commitment to maintaining Cheltenham's status as the Home of Jump Racing. He said, "Our focus will always be on providing the best facilities, on and off the track, which is why we are investing in this work."
Lavender acknowledged the disappointment this decision may cause among racegoers but stressed its necessity. "This was a decision that we gave a great deal of consideration to. While we appreciate that racegoers will share in our disappointment at not being able to stage our last three fixtures of the season, it is vital to give the racing surface time to recover and allow our grounds team to prepare the track for October and next season's jumps programme."
The proactive approach aims to ensure the track is in optimal condition for future events, safeguarding the quality and safety of jump racing at one of the UK's most iconic venues.
