Four England Players Risk World Cup Semi-Final Ban with Yellow Cards
Four England Players Risk Semi-Final Ban with Yellow Cards

England face a disciplinary crisis ahead of their World Cup quarter-final against Norway, with four key players walking a tightrope on yellow cards and defender Jarell Quansah already suspended for two matches.

Four Players at Risk of Semi-Final Ban

Declan Rice, Jude Bellingham, Marc Guehi and Nico O'Reilly are each one booking away from missing a potential semi-final. According to FIFA regulations, players who accumulate two yellow cards in different matches during the tournament receive an automatic one-match ban. Since these four were cautioned in earlier knockout rounds, any yellow card against Norway would trigger a suspension for the next game.

Should England advance past Norway, the semi-final opponent would be either Argentina or Switzerland. The quarter-final is scheduled for Saturday in Miami.

Yellow Card Reset After Quarter-Finals

If the four players avoid bookings against Norway and England progress, their yellow card records will be wiped clean after the quarter-finals, just as they were after the group stage. This means no player can be ruled out of the World Cup final through yellow card accumulation in the semi-final. From the semi-finals onward, only a red card can prevent a player from appearing in the final.

Quansah's Two-Match Suspension

Jarell Quansah is the only England player currently suspended for the Norway clash. The 23-year-old defender received a direct red card in the 54th minute of England's 3-2 last-16 victory over Mexico for a heavy sliding challenge on Jesús Gallardo. FIFA's disciplinary committee deemed the tackle "serious foul play" under Article 14 of their code of conduct, extending his ban to two matches.

This means Quansah will miss both the quarter-final against Norway and, if England advance, the semi-final. He will only be eligible to play again if England reach the World Cup final.
