North Downs 50 Ultra Challenge Set for August 1
A host of heartwarming and inspirational people will head to Surrey this summer for one of the area's leading endurance events. Thousands are preparing to take on the North Downs 50 Ultra Challenge on Saturday, August 1, across some of Surrey's most picturesque landscapes. The event will see participants of all experience levels head to Guildford to run, walk, or jog along the historic North Downs Way, tackling distances of 50km, 25km, and 10km through the heart of the Surrey Hills.
Scenic Route Through Surrey Hills
With its mix of chalk ridgelines, ancient woodland, and sweeping viewpoints, the route offers a striking contrast to nearby city life, giving participants the chance to experience a lesser-seen side of Surrey just a short distance from London. From peaceful forest trails to open hilltops overlooking the surrounding countryside, the Challenge combines accessibility with a real sense of escape.
Expected Participation and Local Boost
Organisers expect around 1,500 participants to take part across the weekend, many travelling into the region with friends and family, providing a boost for local pubs, restaurants, accommodation providers, and independent businesses.
Flexible Challenge for All Abilities
Unlike traditional races, the North Downs 50 is designed as a flexible challenge rather than a competition, with entrants encouraged to complete the course at their own pace. Many participants walk the route, and many run, while teams often take it on together, creating a sociable and supportive atmosphere throughout.

A network of fully stocked rest stops, hot food points, and experienced welfare teams ensures participants are supported every step of the way, helping make the event achievable for first-time Challengers as well as experienced endurance athletes. The event is also expected to generate significant fundraising, as many participants take on the Challenge for charities close to their hearts, with more than £100,000 raised so far. Across the wider Ultra Challenge Series, millions of pounds are raised each year for good causes.
