St Clare Hospice is calling on local cyclists to register for the London to Brighton Cycle Ride taking place on Sunday, September 13, 2025. The event offers participants the opportunity to transform a personal challenge into meaningful support for local hospice care.
Event Details
Starting from Clapham Common, riders will cover a 55-mile route to Brighton as part of Team St Clare. The day is defined by determination and purpose, with many participants finding the ride deeply personal. Matt Butler, a Harlow local who completed the challenge in 2024, signed up in memory of his father.
"What inspired me to take on the challenge was my dad, who died in 2023, and had a brief but comfortable stay at St Clare Hospice - they do an amazing job and giving back only feels right," said Matt. "It was also a ride he had done throughout his life, so it just made sense."
Personal Motivation
Taking on London to Brighton as his first major fundraising event, Matt found strength in both his preparation and motivation. "Mentally, I felt as if my dad was with me doing it. Just being there, participating in the moment, knowing you are trying to make a difference - that's what it's all about."
Reflecting on his fundraising success, Matt added: "I set up a fundraising page and shared it with friends, family and colleagues and it went well over my target. My message was simple: 'a penny or a pound, it'll make a huge difference.'"
Accessibility and Support
The event is designed to be accessible and rewarding for everyone, from experienced cyclists to first-time riders. With a £55 registration fee and a minimum sponsorship target of £300, participants receive full support from the moment they sign up. Riders get pre-event training and fundraising support, a fully signposted route with water stops, and mechanical assistance on the day. Every finisher earns a London to Brighton medal, and Team St Clare cyclists benefit from dedicated support throughout, along with a St Clare vest once they reach £100 in fundraising.
Matt encourages others to take part: "Just do it! Even the Ditchling Beacon climb! It's such an incredible feeling when you finish."
