Callan Burke, a 29-year-old kickboxer from Swarcliffe, is setting his sights on major national shows after a dramatic knockout victory transformed his sporting ambitions. Previously content to compete semi-professionally while working as a glazier for a glass installation company, the former Temple Moor High School student now aims to contribute to Leeds' rich sporting history.
Knockout Victory Sparks New Ambition
Burke returned to the ring after a nine-month absence to secure a vicious switch kick to the liver at the Barnsley Metrodome on a show promoted by Scott McHugh. The win, which earned him McHugh's promotions knockout of the year for 2023, has inspired him to build a large fanbase and showcase his skills at quality venues.
“I turned 29 this month, and I know I’m good at combat sports,” Burke said. “The atmosphere was amazing and it made me realise that my ambition is to do whatever’s necessary to get on as many major shows at quality venues as I can and build a solid fanbase throughout the city.”
Journey from Lockdown to Undefeated Streak
Burke started his combat sports journey in 2021 after pandemic lockdown restrictions ended. After losing an early Thai boxing match, he dedicated himself to K1 kickboxing and is currently undefeated in eight bouts. He trains up to four times a week at the Team Fu martial arts facility in Kirkstall.
“I’d been out for nine months, so I was glad to get back in the ring and chuffed to get the win by a vicious but crowd-pleasing switch kick to the liver,” he said. “Last year, I got the McHugh’s promotions knockout of the year following my win on Scott’s September show with a brutal head kick. It’s dangerous and obviously violent, but not cruel, as both athletes want an all-action bout, allowing us to demonstrate how skilful and courageous we are.”

Burke now hopes to secure local business partnerships to fund his journey toward major national promotions. He believes Leeds residents have a strong sense of togetherness and will support homegrown talent.
