Midlands' Wild Wolf Run Celebrates 15 Years of Muddy Family Adventure
A wild running event that originated in the Midlands is commemorating its 15th anniversary this year. The popular Wolf Run was established by a local farming family and continues to be led by brothers Charlie and Will Moreton. The event has evolved significantly since its inaugural race, expanding from a modest 650 runners to attracting an impressive 30,000 participants annually.
Not Your Typical Race
Unlike conventional races where speed is paramount, the Wolf Run challenges brave participants with thick mud, cold water, and intricate obstacles set against the backdrop of stunning wild countryside. The focus is on adventure and endurance rather than merely crossing the finish line first.
Scenic Event Locations
Two of the primary events, Spring Wolf and Autumn Wolf, are hosted at the picturesque Offchurch Bury near Leamington Spa. Meanwhile, the Summer Wolf event takes over Stanford Hall in Leicestershire for an exhilarating weekend of outdoor excitement. Charlie and Will, who spent their childhood exploring these wild areas, emphasize the importance of maintaining a spirit of adventure into adulthood.
Family-Friendly Offerings
The entire family can participate, with Junior Wolf races specifically designed for children aged 7 to 17. For those seeking a less intense challenge, the dog-friendly Wolf Trails provide a scenic run free from obstacles, ensuring inclusivity for all.
A True Family Business
The Wolf Run operates as a genuine family enterprise, with numerous Moreton family members contributing behind the scenes. "We have lots of family members involved," founder Charlie Moreton explained, highlighting that his cousin, wife, sister, and father-in-law all hold crucial roles. "Quite a few of our uncles and cousins get involved too whether it’s marshalling, driving, registration or running the bar," he added.
Festival Atmosphere
The event village features a DJ to cultivate a festive ambiance, transforming the day into more than just a run. This approach enhances the community feel and enjoyment for all attendees.
Adventurous Leadership
The brothers embody the adventurous spirit they promote, often engaging in rock climbing or mountain biking down glaciers during their leisure time. "We run together still. We always try and do the test run together," Will Moreton shared. He sometimes joins the final wave of runners to connect with participants while everyone is "caked in mud together."
15-Year Milestone Celebration
To mark the 15-year milestone, both brothers plan to run the final wave of the Autumn Wolf event together later this year. Tickets are currently available for those eager to join the celebration and embrace the muddy fun for a good cause.
