Students from Chase High School in Westcliff-on-Sea have delivered exceptional performances in national athletics competitions this summer, achieving personal bests and record-breaking results for the school.
National School Athletics Cup Success
In the National School Athletics Cup, the Year 7 and 8 team finished 24th out of 5,000 schools nationally, while the Year 9 and 10 boys placed 40th and the Year 7 and 8 girls came 123rd. These are the school's highest-ever finishes in the competition. The boys' teams also broke the school's all-time points record.
Borough Athletics Championships
A team of 82 students competed at the Borough Athletics Championships at Garon Park in Southend, earning 21 medals. The boys finished fifth overall, the girls placed seventh, and the Year 7 boys secured third in their year group. Paul Copsey, director of sport, said: "Our students again performed beyond expectation and did the school proud."
Regional and National Finals
Year 10 students Emmanuel and Fejiro represented Essex at the regional finals of the Multi Events in Bedford. Over two days, they competed in long jump, javelin, discus, 400m, hurdles, shot put, high jump, and 1,500m. Fejiro finished sixth, and Emmanuel placed tenth. Mr Copsey noted: "When you consider there are more than 80,000 boys in their year group in the East of England, these are amazing results." Emmanuel achieved four personal bests, and Fejiro recorded two, both improving their overall scores. The Essex team qualified for the national final in Bedford in September.
East of England Athletics Championships
Students also competed at the East of England Athletics Championships, achieving top places in shot put, hammer, discus, and 800m. Headteacher Matt Suttenwood said: "At Chase High School, we are committed to providing opportunities for every young person to discover and develop their talents. It is wonderful to see our students representing both the school and Essex with such pride, and they should all be immensely proud of everything they have achieved." He added: "They are exceptional ambassadors for our school, and I look forward to seeing what they accomplish next."
