From Injury to Six Nations: Student's Dream Refereeing Role

A talented rugby player's career was halted by a shoulder injury, but his passion for the game led him to a new path as an assistant referee at the prestigious Six Nations match between Wales and France. George Clemence, a Level 3 Sports Science student, recently stood centre pitch at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, fulfilling a lifelong ambition through his involvement in the college's WRU Referee Programme.

George described the experience as incredible, noting he never imagined being in such a position, listening to national anthems and watching players like Dewi Lake perform with heart. His journey to this level showcases determination and adaptability when life takes an unexpected turn.

Overcoming Setbacks and Finding a New Role

Nearly two years ago, George suffered a shoulder injury while playing for Colwyn Bay, forcing him to step away from the sport he loved. Rather than leaving rugby behind, he sought ways to stay involved, ultimately choosing refereeing. His keen interest in understanding the game's nuances, even as a player, by observing referees, has significantly influenced his current approach.

"I think it really helped me understand the game a lot more and had an impact on the way I referee now," George added. He began by officiating his younger brother's under-11s games, which led to opportunities in Rygbi Gogledd Cymru cup matches and beyond.

College Programme and Future Aspirations

At Grŵp Llandrillo Menai, George joined the WRU Referee Programme, run by Ollie Coles, which partners with the Rugby Union to support aspiring referees. This initiative helped him earn a Level 2 qualification and gain valuable experience in youth and college development games.

"The amount of support I've had is unreal," George said, highlighting the programme's role in his growth. Now in his first full season as a referee, he has more games lined up to hone his skills. Additionally, George plans to undergo shoulder surgery soon, aiming to return to playing while continuing his refereeing career.

"I think as much as I enjoy refereeing, I don't think I'd be where I am now if it wasn't for playing rugby. So, I'm going to try and play one more game or even as many as I can, and then see how far refereeing takes me," he explained.

A Success Story for College Partnership

George's achievement underscores the success of Grŵp Llandrillo Menai's partnership with the Welsh Rugby Union. Ollie Coles praised George's hard work and dedication, stating that the Six Nations appointment marks just the beginning of a promising career as a match official representing North Wales.

Looking ahead, George hopes to complete a Level 3 refereeing qualification but emphasizes enjoying the journey. "I'm young," he said. "I'm here to enjoy the experience, enjoy every game that I referee and just make sure I have a smile on my face and have a lot of fun." This story serves as an inspiration for other students pursuing similar paths in sports.
