Birmingham Airport Disrupted by 13 Flight Cancellations as German Pilots Strike
Thirteen flights have been cancelled at Birmingham Airport today, Monday 13 April 2026, due to industrial action affecting Lufthansa and Eurowings airlines. The cancellations are a result of a two-day strike called by the German commercial pilots' union, Vereinigung Cockpit (VC), which is protesting unresolved wage and pension disputes.
Strike Action Details and Impact
The union, representing over 10,000 pilots across various German airlines, has initiated strike action today and tomorrow, Tuesday 14 April. VC President Andreas Pinheiro stated that the decision was made after employers showed no real willingness to reach solutions in collective bargaining disputes. He added, "Despite our deliberate decision not to take strike action over the Easter holidays, no serious offers have been made." The strike specifically targets Eurowings GmbH flights, impacting routes to and from Birmingham.
Lufthansa has responded by saying, "Lufthansa is working intensively to keep the impact on our passengers as low as possible," but the disruption is significant for travelers. The affected flights include both departures and arrivals, primarily to German destinations such as Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, and Munich.
