Airline Food and Drink Bans: What Ryanair, Jet2, and EasyJet Prohibit
Half term is in full swing, and many Brummies are preparing to jet off to sunnier destinations. As families pack their luggage, it is crucial to be aware of airline regulations to avoid getting caught out this year.
Frequent flyers often know that purchasing meals or snacks on a plane can be pricey. While bringing your own food and drinks is an option, airlines like Ryanair, Jet2, TUI, and EasyJet have specific rules and tips that passengers must follow.
Ryanair's "Feel Free" Policy
Ryanair permits holidaymakers to bring food and non-alcoholic drinks aboard under its "feel free" policy. However, the airline strictly prohibits passengers from boarding with hot drinks or consuming their own alcohol during the flight.
Ryanair stated: "In the interest of safety we cannot allow passengers to board the plane with hot drinks or consume their own alcohol during the flight." This rule is clearly outlined on their website to ensure passenger safety and compliance.
Jet2's Restrictions on Hot Items
Jet2 does not allow hot food or drinks onboard. Their website explicitly states: "You may not bring hot food or hot drinks onboard the aircraft." The carrier offers a variety of refreshments for purchase during the flight, as reported by the Record.
Additionally, Jet2 advises against bringing items that are unsuitable due to weight, size, character, fragility, or perishability. This includes hot or strong-smelling foods and drinks that may affect the safety, health, or comfort of other passengers or crew. Only alcoholic drinks purchased on the plane can be consumed during the journey.
EasyJet's Guidelines for Food and Drinks
On EasyJet flights, passengers are allowed to bring their own food. The airline highlights that various snacks and drinks are available for purchase throughout the flight. However, there are important regulations to note.
EasyJet's website reads: "You can bring food into the cabin, although we do sell a range of delicious food and drink on board. There's a 100ml limit for liquid food, like soup or custard. Different countries have different regulations about importing food and drink, so make sure you check the rules for your destination."
Passengers are permitted to bring hot drinks on EasyJet flights, but only if they have been purchased at the airport and come with secure lids for safety reasons.
Other Important Regulations
Beyond airline-specific rules, there are broader EU regulations that prohibit taking any meat or dairy products into member states. These restrictions can extend to items like sandwiches, even if they were purchased at an airport terminal.
Travelers should always verify destination-specific import rules to avoid confiscation or fines. Being informed about these policies can help ensure a smooth and hassle-free journey during this busy travel period.
