Major Airlines Provide Crucial Updates on Middle Eastern Flight Resumptions

Significant airlines including TUI, Emirates, British Airways, Jet2, easyJet, and Virgin Atlantic have issued important updates as thousands of flights to Middle Eastern countries remain cancelled amid ongoing regional tensions. According to aviation analytics company Cirium, today alone anticipates 1,896 cancellations out of 5,456 scheduled flights to Middle Eastern destinations, with 1,333 of these specifically bound for Turkey. Numerous additional flights are grounded but not yet formally listed as cancelled.

Widespread Flight Disruptions Across the Region

In certain nations including Israel, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates, virtually all flights have been scrapped today. Following recent military actions involving US and Israeli strikes on Iran, the total number of cancelled flights has reached 7,766. With substantial numbers of British citizens and other nationals anxious to depart the conflict-affected region, attention has turned to when carriers can safely resume normal operations.

Emirates Flight Operations Update

A handful of Emirates flights have taken off from Dubai and are due to land at various UK airports today. However, commercial services remain largely grounded. "All scheduled Emirates flights to and from Dubai remain suspended until 2359hrs UAE time on 4 March, due to airspace closures across the region," a spokesperson for the airline confirmed. The airline continues to operate a limited number of passenger repatriation and freighter flights on 3 and 4 March, accommodating customers with earlier bookings as priority on these limited services.

Virgin Atlantic Service Adjustments

Virgin Atlantic has rerouted some flights and cancelled services between London Heathrow and Dubai on Sunday 1, Monday 2, and Tuesday 3 March, as well as services between London Heathrow and Riyadh on Sunday 1 and Monday 2 March. The safety and security of our customers and people is always our top priority, a company spokesperson emphasized, recommending that all customers due to travel to or from Dubai and Riyadh over the next 48 hours check flight status online before proceeding to airports.

British Airways Flexible Options

British Airways is closely monitoring the situation and has cancelled numerous flights to the Middle East. The airline has implemented flexible options for affected travelers, allowing free flight date changes for journeys between London Heathrow and Abu Dhabi, Amman, Bahrain, Doha, Dubai, or Tel Aviv up to and including 15 March, with travel permitted until 29 March. Customers traveling up to and including 8 March may also request full refunds through their booking management portal.

Jet2 Continues Cyprus Services

Jet2 has announced it will continue its flights to Cyprus, distinguishing itself from airlines including Ryanair and easyJet that have cancelled services today. "We always follow the travel advice of the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, and their current guidance shows no travel restrictions in place to Cyprus," a Jet2 spokesperson explained, confirming that flights and holidays are operating normally subject to usual terms and conditions.

Etihad Limited Operations

Etihad is operating a very limited number of flights from the Middle East to the UK today, but the vast majority are cancelled until at least Thursday. "All Etihad Airways' scheduled commercial flights to and from Abu Dhabi remain suspended until 14:00 UAE time on Thursday 5 March," a spokesperson stated, noting that some repositioning, cargo, and repatriation flights may operate with strict operational and safety approvals.

TUI Collaborative Repatriation Efforts

TUI's CEO Sebastian Ebel has revealed that the airline is working with carriers including Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Etihad to bring customers home starting today. "We currently expect to be able to operate the first flights with these companies and our passengers today," he told media outlets. However, there remains no clear indication of when normal commercial flights will resume, with safety continuing as the highest priority.

EasyJet Cyprus Cancellations

Several easyJet flights to Cyprus have been cancelled today, affecting both Larnaca and Paphos airports. "Due to the events affecting the RAF base in Akrotiri in Cyprus, as a precaution, we will not be operating the four return flights to Cyprus scheduled today," a company spokesperson confirmed. The airline is providing hotel accommodation and meals for affected customers while advising all travelers to check flight trackers for latest information.

Wizz Air Suspension Announcement

Wizz Air has confirmed suspension of all flights to and from Israel, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Amman, and Saudi Arabia with immediate effect up until and including 7 March. The airline maintains ongoing contact with local and international authorities, aviation safety agencies, and relevant governmental bodies, with operational decisions continuously reviewed as the situation evolves.

With millions of people attempting to leave the region and thousands of flights disrupted, airlines emphasize that safety remains their paramount concern while working to restore normal operations as soon as conditions permit.
