Major Airlines Issue Travel Warnings for UAE Flights Amid Regional Conflict

British Airways, Emirates, Etihad, and Virgin Atlantic have issued urgent updates for UK tourists traveling to and from the United Arab Emirates and surrounding Middle Eastern destinations. The warnings come following Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper's statement in the House of Commons regarding the escalating regional situation.

Government Statement on Regional Developments

Labour Party Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper addressed Parliament, stating: "I am in close contact with my counterparts across the region, speaking again yesterday with the UAE on the excellent support that they are providing and some of the departures that they are now securing as this becomes viable."

Ms. Cooper emphasized that the government was "working with airlines on increasing capacity out of Muscat for British nationals" and noted that Britons in Oman would need to await contact from the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO).

"This is a very fast-moving situation. We have unprecedented numbers of British nationals in the region, and I will continue to update members and affected British nationals as the situation evolves," she added.

Airline-Specific Updates and Cancellations

Emirates Airlines has suspended all scheduled flights to and from Dubai until 23:59 UAE time on March 4th due to regional airspace closures. A spokesperson confirmed that the airline continues to operate limited passenger repatriation and freighter flights on March 3rd and 4th, prioritizing customers with earlier bookings.

The airline explicitly warned: "Please do not go to the airport unless you have been notified directly by Emirates or hold a confirmed booking for these flights."

Virgin Atlantic has cancelled services between London Heathrow and Dubai from Sunday, March 1st through Tuesday, March 3rd, as well as London Heathrow to Riyadh flights on March 1st and 2nd. A company representative stated: "The safety and security of our customers and people is always our top priority and we apologise for any inconvenience caused."

The airline is contacting affected customers directly and advises all travelers to check flight statuses on their website before proceeding to airports.

British Airways has cancelled multiple Middle East flights and offered flexible rebooking options. Passengers scheduled to travel between London Heathrow and Abu Dhabi, Amman, Bahrain, Doha, Dubai, or Tel Aviv through March 15th can change their flight date free of charge to travel on or before March 29th.

Customers traveling through March 8th may request full refunds through the Manage My Booking system. Similar flexibility applies to London-Larnaca routes through March 15th.

Etihad Airways has suspended all scheduled commercial flights to and from Abu Dhabi until 14:00 UAE time on Thursday, March 5th. The airline emphasized: "Guests should not travel to the airport unless they have been contacted directly by Etihad and advised to do so. Access to the airport will be restricted for those without confirmed travel documentation."

Ongoing Monitoring and Passenger Guidance

All affected airlines continue to monitor the Middle East situation closely, with Virgin Atlantic noting they are conducting "ongoing dynamic assessments and active changes to our flight routings based on the latest information and guidance." British Airways reiterated that "safety is always our top priority, and we would never operate a flight unless it was safe to do so."

Travelers are strongly advised to:

  • Check airline websites directly for the latest flight status updates
  • Avoid traveling to airports without confirmed bookings or direct airline notification
  • Utilize available rebooking and refund options through official airline channels
  • Monitor Foreign Office travel advice for the latest security information
