Alicante Airport's £1.1bn Revamp for British Tourists Post-EES
Alicante Airport £1.1bn Revamp for UK Tourists

A major Spanish airport is set for a transformative £1.1 billion renovation, specifically designed to manage the influx of British travellers following the introduction of the EU's new Entry-Exit System.

Major Upgrade for a Key Tourist Gateway

Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport, a crucial hub for UK tourists visiting the Costa Blanca, will be almost completely rebuilt. The driving force behind this colossal investment is the recent implementation of the EU's Entry-Exit System (EES), which requires enhanced border processing for non-EU citizens.

The new system, which was introduced last month, mandates the electronic storage of facial images and four fingerprints from every non-EU passenger entering the Schengen area. This includes popular holiday destinations like France, Greece, and Croatia.

Cutting-Edge Technology and Expanded Facilities

A dedicated new area within the airport will be equipped with the latest EES machines to efficiently process the high volume of British passengers. With 6.12 million British passengers passing through Alicante last year, these facilities are expected to be in constant use.

Beyond border control, the upgrade includes state-of-the-art baggage inspection equipment. This new technology will allow passengers to keep liquids and electronic devices in their hand luggage during security checks, significantly speeding up the process.

The project is incredibly comprehensive, extending to the entire terminal area, including parking and access roads. The airport's overall size is set to increase by nearly 30%.

A New Terminal and Passenger Experience

In one of the most dramatic changes, the existing terminal building will be demolished and replaced. The new terminal is anticipated to have the capacity to handle up to 26 million passengers annually.

Passengers can also look forward to a host of improvements designed to enhance their journey, including:

  • Automated conveyor belts
  • New shopping areas
  • An exclusive VIP lounge

The initial phase of this vast project is scheduled for completion by Summer 2027, with further enhancements and work on the rest of the airport continuing until 2031.
