Birmingham Airport Flights Cancelled on April 23 Amid Lufthansa Strikes

Birmingham Airport has confirmed a series of flight cancellations affecting travellers on Thursday, April 23, as Lufthansa continues to grapple with widespread disruption and strikes across its network.

The cancellations stem from a protracted battle between unions and airline management, leading to significant operational challenges for the German carrier.

Widespread Disruption Across European Hubs

Birmingham is among the airports impacted by these cancellations, which are part of a broader pattern affecting major European aviation hubs.

On Friday alone, approximately 650 flights were cancelled at Frankfurt Airport, Germany's primary aviation centre, with over 400 more scrapped at Munich Airport.

The disruptions are the result of coordinated action by the cabin crew union UFO and the pilots' union Vereinigung Cockpit (VC), which have disrupted operations at Lufthansa, Lufthansa Cargo, and Cityline for five consecutive days.

Union Criticisms and Airline Strategy

Andreas Pinheiro, President of VC, has criticised the airline's approach, stating, "On the one hand, a major crisis is being cited as justification for removing capacity from the market. On the other hand, it is simultaneously being examined whether other group companies – such as Lufthansa Classic itself – could take over these routes, even though, according to management, they are even less profitable."

Separately, Lufthansa has announced plans to end 20,000 short-haul routes across its network through October to achieve jet fuel savings of more than 40,000 metric tons.

The airline cited that jet fuel costs have doubled since the outbreak of the Iran conflict, prompting these significant schedule adjustments.

These cancellations, which include flights previously operated by CityLine, will impact hubs in Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich, Vienna, Brussels, and Rome, aiming to reduce the number of unprofitable short-haul flights.

Lufthansa has described these measures as "flight schedule optimizations" and indicated they will continue, despite assuring that the "group's jet fuel supply is secured for the coming weeks."
