Bristol Airport's 'Critical' Economic Role Highlighted in New Business Report
Bristol Airport plays a critical role in the regional economy and is essential for attracting international tourists, students, and business travelers, according to a new report. The research, conducted by CBI Economics and commissioned by the transport hub, surveyed approximately 230 companies across the South West.
Business Travel and Connectivity Insights
Among those surveyed, 79 percent stated that in-person meetings facilitated by air travel are important to their company's success. Additionally, one-third of respondents anticipate an increase in international business travel over the next one to three years.
However, the report also uncovered challenges. More than half (52 percent) of the businesses currently rely on other airports, such as Heathrow and Gatwick, due to gaps in route availability or frequency at Bristol Airport. Respondents noted that this reliance harms productivity and drives up costs, with limited connectivity leading to missed opportunities for the visitor economy. Specifically, 26 percent reported lost inbound visitor opportunities because of flight availability issues.
Airport Expansion Plans and Economic Impact
The report's release follows a recent planning application submitted by Bristol Airport to North Somerset Council, aiming to increase its annual passenger capacity from 12 million to 15 million. According to the airport, this expansion would create an extra 1,000 on-site jobs, including roles in engineering, mechanics, airline crew, retail, and catering.
Dave Lees, chief executive of Bristol Airport, emphasized the findings: “This robust and independent assessment makes clear how vital international air connectivity is for our region’s economy. Business travel has changed since the pandemic, but we’ve seen overall growth – there’s still huge value in meeting face-to-face. Our plans for growth would provide new connections, improving productivity so that passengers don’t have to travel via London airports, and attracting more visitors. The study makes clear that stymying growth would mean our region loses competitiveness, with benefits going elsewhere.”
Support from Business Leaders
Douglas Ure, chief executive of Business West, the South West chamber of commerce, voiced strong support: “The airport is vital infrastructure that supports our strong economic position. The proposed plans would create new jobs and further facilitate the flow of services, goods, and business connections. We support these proposals and expect many of our members will too.”
The expansion plans are expected to enable routes to more destinations, including key European cities and a limited number of new longer-haul flights to North America and the Middle East.
Historical Context and Recent Trends
In 2022, Bristol Airport received approval to expand from 10 million to 12 million passengers per year after a High Court judge dismissed a challenge to the plans. Last year, around 1.6 million journeys were made via Bristol Airport, surpassing pre-COVID-19 travel restriction levels and indicating a strong recovery in air travel demand.
This report underscores the airport's strategic importance, with business leaders advocating for growth to enhance regional competitiveness and economic vitality.
