EasyJet Makes Major Comeback to Newcastle Airport After Six-Year Absence
EasyJet is set to return to a key UK airport after a six-year hiatus, marking a significant expansion in its operations. The airline, which also operates from Birmingham, is reopening its hub at Newcastle International Airport this spring, following its withdrawal during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020.
Substantial Investment and Job Creation
This new base from EasyJet, a competitor to airlines like Jet2 and Ryanair, is expected to create at least 140 jobs. Kim McGuinness, the region's mayor, welcomed the move, stating: "Tourism is a key part of my growth plans for the region, and I'm pleased to welcome EasyJet's investment back into our region, which highlights the strength of our tourism sector."
Expanded Flight Operations and Capacity
EasyJet will operate up to 86 flights per week from Newcastle to 22 leisure destinations, representing an 85% increase compared to last summer. The base will provide over 800,000 seats for holidaymakers, supporting the rapid growth of EasyJet Holidays and positioning 2026 as its biggest summer season ever.
New Routes and Economic Impact
The 11 new routes include:
- Antalya, Turkey
- Corfu, Greece
- Dalaman, Turkey
- Enfidha, Tunisia
- Faro, Portugal
- Lisbon, Portugal (launching June 22)
- Malta

Nick Jones, CEO of Newcastle Airport, commented: "The launch of EasyJet's new base is fantastic news for Newcastle Airport and the wider North East region. It provides more choice for passengers, with over 800,000 seats available this summer, and strengthens our largest-ever flight programme."
Boost to Regional Economy
Jones added that this investment delivers substantial economic benefits, including high-quality jobs, increased inbound tourism, and a contribution of over £1 billion in Gross Value Added (GVA) annually to the regional economy. He noted: "EasyJet's investment is a huge vote of confidence in the Airport and the North East, playing a vital role in meeting growing demand for flights and package holidays as we prepare for a record year with six million passengers expected."
