Five flights have been cancelled today (Friday 24 April) at Birmingham Airport by a major airline as fuel prices surge. Lufthansa has announced that 20,000 short-haul flights are being cut from its schedule this summer, allowing it to save on the soaring cost of jet fuel. This means that flights at Birmingham Airport will continue to be cancelled this summer.
Today's Cancellations
Today, five flights are cancelled at the airport, with routes to and from Frankfurt and Munich axed. Most of the cuts from the airline come from closing its loss-making CityLine fleet and retiring its 27 aircraft. However, it also blamed the cost of jet fuel, which it said had more than doubled. Most airlines are dealing with soaring costs as Middle East oil supplies remain largely cut off due to the blocking of the Strait of Hormuz.
EU Warning on Summer Holidays
The EU has warned that Europe is in a "very serious crisis" as aviation fuel stocks start to run low due to the war in Iran. It said people might have to change holiday plans this summer. Dan Jorgensen, the EU’s energy commissioner, said it is "very likely" that people’s holidays will be affected by cancelled flights or very expensive tickets. He told Sky News: "Unfortunately, it's very likely that many people's holidays will be affected, either by flight cancellations or very, very expensive tickets. Even if we do everything we can do, if the jet fuel is not there, then it's not there."
Supply Concerns
The International Energy Agency has warned that major supply issues could occur in the next five to six weeks. Airlines are already taking steps to reduce demand, including Lufthansa announcing the cancellation of 20,000 flights in the coming months.
