The Foreign Office has issued a jet fuel shortage update, clarifying whether UK tourists need to change their travel plans. The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) shared guidance on its website as concerns over aviation fuel shortages persist.
No Immediate Need to Change Plans
The FCDO stated: "There is no current need for passengers to change their travel plans. UK airlines buy jet fuel in advance, and airports maintain stocks to support their resilience." The government is working closely with the aviation industry to monitor risks and minimise disruption to passengers.
Passenger Rights
If a flight is cancelled, passengers have clear legal rights, including the right to a full refund or re-routing. The FCDO advises travellers to check with their airlines before travelling and to consult FCDO travel advice for the latest updates. Appropriate travel insurance is also recommended.
Government Actions
Downing Street confirmed that the UK is "in a good position" to handle global supply problems caused by the unresolved Iran war. The Prime Minister's spokesperson said: "We remain focused on a long-term, permanent solution to the crisis. As a result of forward-planning over the past few months, the UK is in a good position." The government is ramping up planning for potential impacts on the UK economy and consumers, including live monitoring of stock levels and supply chain disruption.
Fuel Supply Resilience
The spokesperson added that petrol stations are well stocked, and the UK has a diverse and resilient supply. Fuel production and inputs continue as usual, with no issues reported. Only a small amount of petrol, diesel, and crude oil is imported from the Middle East, which is why the UK has not experienced supply issues. In 2025, UK refinery production of petrol from crude oil exceeded demand.
The FCDO reiterated: "There is no current need to change upcoming travel plans. Government regularly meets with industry to monitor risks, understand pressures, and ensure clear communication with passengers, should circumstances change."
