Four more flights at Birmingham Airport have been cancelled today as part of a major airline's decision to cut thousands of journeys from its summer schedule. Lufthansa, the German carrier, has announced it will cancel 20,000 short-haul flights scheduled up to October to reduce jet fuel consumption. The move comes amid ongoing fuel shortages and rising prices linked to the conflict in Iran.
Impact on Birmingham Airport
On April 25, five Lufthansa flights to and from Frankfurt were cancelled. Today, an additional four flights have been grounded. The affected services include two departures and two arrivals, as listed below:
Cancelled Departures
- 10:20 am Lufthansa to Frankfurt - cancelled
- 5:55 am (Tuesday morning) Lufthansa to Frankfurt - cancelled
Cancelled Arrivals
- 9:45 am Lufthansa from Frankfurt - cancelled
- 21:46 Lufthansa from Frankfurt - cancelled
Lufthansa's cuts are being implemented across its six main hubs: Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich, Vienna, Brussels, and Rome. According to the airline group, approximately 120 flights are being cancelled daily due to these fuel-saving measures.
Other airlines, including KLM-France and Delta, have also temporarily reduced flights, while some carriers have opted to raise ticket prices to pass on higher costs to customers. The situation remains fluid as airlines continue to grapple with the effects of the Iran war on fuel supplies.
