Major European Airline KLM Cancels 160 Flights Amid Rising Fuel Costs

KLM, a prominent European airline based in the Netherlands, has announced the cancellation of 160 flights within Europe over the coming month. The decision is attributed to escalating kerosene prices, which have rendered these routes financially unsustainable.

Limited Impact on Overall Schedule

The airline confirmed that these cancellations represent less than 1% of its total European flight operations during this period. Specifically, KLM will operate 80 fewer return flights to and from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport.

A spokesperson for KLM stated: "KLM has made a number of adjustments to its flight schedule for the coming month. This concerns a limited number of flights within Europe that, due to rising kerosene costs, are currently no longer financially viable to operate."

The airline emphasized that there is no shortage of jet fuel, clarifying that the cancellations are solely due to economic factors.

Passenger Rebooking Assurances

KLM has pledged to rebook all affected passengers onto the next available flights. The airline noted that many of the impacted destinations, such as London and Düsseldorf, are served multiple times daily, facilitating swift reaccommodation.

"Passengers affected by these changes will be rebooked onto the next available flight," the spokesperson added. "As these are destinations KLM serves multiple times a day, travellers can usually be accommodated quickly."

Despite the cancellations, KLM anticipates a busy May holiday period and is committed to ensuring passengers can reach their destinations as planned.

Extended Suspension of Middle East Flights

In a separate development, KLM has prolonged its suspension of flights to certain Middle Eastern destinations due to ongoing regional uncertainty. Services to Riyadh and Dammam will remain cancelled until at least June 14, 2026.

Flights to Dubai are also suspended through the same date, consistent with prior announcements. This decision aims to provide greater clarity for passengers with upcoming travel plans.

The airline cited continued concerns about operational conditions and safety in the region, even as the situation evolves. KLM is closely monitoring developments and will adjust its schedule accordingly.

Passengers impacted by these cancellations are being notified and offered options for rebooking or refunds.
