Travel Advice: Should You Cancel Flights to Cyprus or UAE Amid Conflict?

Ongoing conflict in the Middle East has led to dozens of flight cancellations by major airlines worldwide, as the global community grapples with the chaos of recent days. The situation escalated on February 28, when the United States and Israel launched strikes on Iran, resulting in the death of Ali Khamenei, Iran's supreme leader, as confirmed by the Iranian government.

In retaliation, Iran organised strikes targeting areas across the Middle East, including popular destinations for British nationals such as Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. Additionally, Cyprus has been plunged into turmoil after an RAF base in Akrotiri was struck by a one-way attack drone.

The Cypriot government reported on Monday, March 2, that two unmanned drones heading towards the base were "successfully" intercepted, with no casualties reported. This instability has left many Brits with scheduled holidays in the UAE, Cyprus, or other affected regions considering cancelling their trips.

Why Cancelling Flights Might Not Be the Best Decision

However, travel experts strongly advise against cancelling flight tickets in this situation. According to leading travel magazines, under no circumstances should Brits cancel their flights, as doing so could result in the loss of all consumer rights and any claims to a refund or compensation.

Currently, many flights are being cancelled by airlines due to the conflict. If your flight is axed, you are entitled to expect a refund for the cancellation. This is particularly advantageous for those with package holidays, as purchasing a full package typically offers a high level of consumer protection.

Flights and holidays that are cancelled usually occur a few days before departure, based on advice from the Foreign Office. In such cases, travellers should wait for official cancellations rather than taking matters into their own hands, to ensure they receive due refunds and maintain their legal protections.
