Foreign Office Issues Urgent Travel Warning for UK Tourists in Israel and Palestine
The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has issued an urgent travel warning for British nationals in Israel and Palestine, following a major update on Tuesday, March 24. The advisory highlights significant disruptions to air travel and provides critical guidance for those seeking to return to the UK.
Limited Outbound Flights at Ben Gurion Airport
In the update, the FCDO posted "updated information" regarding Ben Gurion Airport, Israel's primary international hub. The airport is currently operating a limited schedule of outbound flights, with operations approved for only a few airlines. The FCDO emphasized that travel within or out of Israel is at your own risk and urged British nationals to review the 'Leaving Israel and Palestine' section on the 'Warnings and insurance' page of its website.
The Ministry of Transport in Israel has confirmed that Ben Gurion Airport is running a restricted outbound flight schedule. Approved airlines include El Al, Israir, Arkia, and Air Haifa, with passenger numbers on each flight limited to comply with Israel Home Front Command regulations. Travelers are advised to regularly check the websites of these airlines for updates on commercial flight options and ticket availability, as schedules can change at short notice.
Safety Precautions and Alternative Travel Options
The FCDO warned that commercial airline options are subject to rapid changes, especially if the security situation deteriorates and the Israeli government deems air travel too dangerous. British nationals, including dual nationals, facing urgent or exceptional circumstances and needing assistance with airline coordination should submit a dedicated assistance form to the Ministry of Transport, using their British passport for application. Eligibility details are available on the Ministry of Transport website.
For those unable to secure flights, other commercial travel options remain available through Jordan and Egypt. Eligible travelers can use the Taba Border Crossing to enter Egypt, with transport services operating from major cities to Eilat. The primary Israeli public transport service, Egged, offers regular buses to Eilat that can be booked online. Additionally, apps like 'Moovit' provide details on public transport, including routes from Eilat to the Taba border crossing, and 'Gett' can be used to book private taxis.
Essential Advice for Departing Travelers
The FCDO stressed that travelers should only attempt to depart if they judge it safe to do so. Key recommendations include checking for the latest updates from airlines or tour operators, following instructions from local authorities, and verifying the status of border crossings before travel. It is also crucial to ensure access to emergency supplies and essential medication during the journey.
This warning underscores the volatile situation in the region and the importance of staying informed through official channels. British nationals are encouraged to monitor FCDO advice closely and plan their travel cautiously amid these uncertainties.
