Birmingham Moor Street in 'meltdown' after broken down train causes delays
Moor Street 'meltdown' after train breakdown delays

A broken down train brought chaos to Birmingham Moor Street station on one of the hottest days of the year, with passengers describing the scene as a 'meltdown'. West Midlands Railway confirmed that a train had broken down at Old Hill Station, causing delays on the line between Snow Hill and Kidderminster.

Disruption and platform changes

Passengers were redirected to Moor Street, where further disruption occurred due to platform changes. One passenger at the station said: 'Meltdown at Moor Street. No West Midlands Railway trains from 4pm after a train breakdown at Old Hill. Had to walk from Snow Hill. Then had to change from Platform 1 to Platform 5 at Moor Street. Then had to wait another half hour for a Chiltern train to be doubled. Just leaving now 20 mins late.'

Staff distributed free water bottles to passengers on the affected trains. The passenger added: 'Staff dumped a crate of free water bottles in our carriage. Going to Solihull, even though I don't want to, just to escape. Anyone going to Stratford has to get off at Leamington Spa. Another station I didn't catch cannot take a train of this length.'

Service cancellations and replacements

Some trains were cancelled, including the 21:55 service to Solihull. However, a number of trains were still scheduled to depart from Moor Street. Due to the broken down train at Old Hill Station, rail replacement buses were operating on several routes: from Stratford-upon-Avon and Shirley, Stratford-upon-Avon and Solihull, and Stourbridge to Kidderminster to Worcester.

Passengers were advised to check their route before traveling. The disruption highlighted the challenges faced by the rail network during peak summer heat, with infrastructure and rolling stock under additional stress.
